Le gouvernement a approuvé en avril 2015, la feuille de route de l’énergie nucléaire 2014-2016 pour guider le développement de l’infrastructure nucléaire en Ouganda. Désormais, le pays est en passe de réaliser ce projet.
L’Agence internationale de l’énergie atomique (AIEA) a annoncé le lundi 9 mai 2022, qu’elle estime que l’Ouganda est prêt pour la production d’énergie nucléaire. D’une capacité de 2 000 MW, il s’agira de la 1ère centrale nucléaire d’Afrique de l’Est.« Dans la première phase, nous avons conclu que l’Ouganda est prêt pour la centrale. Au sein de l’agence, nous sommes prêts à apporter tout le soutien nécessaire par le biais de formations afin que le projet devienne une réalité », a déclaré Aline des Cloizeaux, directrice de l’AIEA.
De son côté, le président ougandais Yoweri Museveni a indiqué que l’Afrique s’intéresse à l’énergie nucléaire (électricité) et non aux armes nucléaires et la raison pour laquelle l’Ouganda se tourne vers l’énergie nucléaire, est que les sources d’énergie hydroélectrique ne sont pas suffisantes pour faire face à la demande croissante. En effet, l’Ouganda dépend fortement de l’énergie hydroélectrique, mais grâce à ce projet, le pays prévoit de multiplier par près de 12 sa capacité de production d’électricité pour atteindre 17 000 MW à moyen terme selon l’Autorité de régulation de l’électricité.
Le site devant abriter ladite centrale a déjà été identifié. Par ailleurs, une école devrait être bientôt mise en place pour former des agents dans le domaine de l’énergie atomique. L’Ouganda a jusqu’à présent, formé 22 personnes au niveau de la maîtrise en sciences nucléaires. La seule centrale atomique d’Afrique est située près du Cap en Afrique du Sud, tandis que le Kenya et le Nigeria ont également des projets de construction de centrales nucléaires.
