Le géant aurifère canadien Endeavour Mining veut lancer, au cours du deuxième trimestre 2022, les travaux de construction d’une nouvelle usine à son complexe aurifère sénégalais Sabodala-Massawa. Basée sur le procédé BIOX du finlandais Metso-Outotec, elle disposera d’une capacité de traitement annuelle de 1,2 million de tonnes, ajoutant 1,35 million d’onces à la production d’or sur la durée de vie du projet. Selon les détails de l’étude de faisabilité dévoilée lundi 4 avril par la compagnie minière canadienne, l’extension du complexe nécessitera un investissement de 290 millions $ qui devrait être supporté par les bénéfices générés par ce dernier. La première coulée d’or est prévue en début d’année 2024, avec une production moyenne annuelle de 194 000 onces d’or sur les cinq premières années.
« Nous nous félicitons à la fois des performances actuelles de Sabodala-Massawa et des résultats de l’étude de faisabilité définitive annoncés aujourd’hui, car ils démontrent le potentiel de l’actif pour devenir une mine de premier plan capable de produire plus de 400 000 onces d’or par an », ajoute Sébastien de Montessus, PDG d’Endeavour. Avec la production actuelle de l’usine CIL installée sur le site, Endeavour vise en effet une production annuelle de 401 à 403 000 onces d’or sur la période 2024-2026, soit légèrement moins que toute la production industrielle d’or du Sénégal en 2020 (451 000 onces). Entre 2022 et 2036, le complexe devrait livrer au total 3,94 millions d’onces d’or.
Alors que la contribution des compagnies minières au budget de l’Etat sénégalais s’élevait à environ 268 millions $ en 2020, selon les données de l’ITIE, cette part pourrait augmenter au fil des années, grâce à des projets comme Sabodala-Massawa. Le prix de l’or, qui se négocie depuis deux ans entre 1 700 $ et 2 000 $ l’once, est également une raison d’espérer la hausse des revenus pour les compagnies aurifères actives dans le pays, ce qui profitera également aux caisses de l’Etat.
