Le géant minier Anglo American Mining a inauguré le plus grand camion de transport à hydrogène du monde vendredi dans une de ses mines de platine d’Afrique du Sud, en présence du président Cyril Ramaphosa qui a salué un « pas de géant » pour la transition énergétique du pays.

Le groupe, présent dans une quinzaine de pays et qui exploite 25 sites en Afrique du Sud, prévoit, si l’essai est concluant, de remplacer toute sa flotte de camions diesel par ces nouveaux prototypes alimentés par une batterie à hydrogène de 2 mégawatts, qui peuvent transporter jusqu’à 290 tonnes de minerai. « Ce que nous lançons n’est pas seulement une impressionnante pièce de machinerie, c’est la genèse de tout un écosystème alimenté par l’hydrogène », s’est réjoui le président Ramaphosa lors de la cérémonie de lancement officielle du gigantesque véhicule, presque de la taille d’une petite maison, présenté à la mine de Mogalakwena (nord), située à environ 250 km de Johannesburg.

« C’est un pas de géant pour la future économie à l’hydrogène de l’Afrique du Sud », a-t-il estimé dans un discours retransmis par des télévisions locales. « C’est vraiment un moment historique » qui « nous donne clairement une vision de ce à quoi le futur peut ressembler », a-t-il ajouté. Anglo American affiche l’ambition d’être neutre en carbone d’ici 2040, notamment par cette technologie à l’hydrogène, obtenu par électrolyse de l’eau alimentée par de l’énergie solaire.
