La première usine de vaccination Covid-19 en Afrique du Sud risque de fermer ses portes après n’avoir reçu aucune commande, a déclaré samedi dernier un dirigeant de l’entreprise. L’annonce intervient en pleine « 5è vague » de Covid dans le pays d’Afrique australe, le plus touché par le virus.
La société pharmaceutique Aspen Pharmacare, qui a obtenu un accord de licence en novembre dernier pour conditionner et vendre le vaccin Covid-19 de Johnson & Johnson et le distribuer en Afrique, a indiqué qu’elle allait transférer environ la moitié de sa capacité de production du vaccin Covid-19 vers d’autres produits, si la demande ne reprend pas dans les six semaines.
Ces défauts de commandes interviennent alors que la plupart des pays du continent relâchent leurs mesures restrictives vis-à-vis du virus, sans que plus de pressions supplémentaires soient mises pour poursuivre les vaccinations. Du reste, la situation ne va pas dans le sens des attentes de l’Union africaine. En effet, l’organisation continentale ambitionne de faire couvrir 60 % des besoins en vaccins de ses populations, avec des produits fabriqués en Afrique, à l’horizon 2040.
